A new ward for swine flu patients was opened at the Kandy General Hospital yesterday. The decision to open the ward was made after a meeting held among senior officials and provincial administrators including Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and provincial public health officials.
Up to yesterday 15 patients suspected of having contracted swine flu had been admitted to the Kandy General Hospital and their blood samples have been sent to the Medical Research Institute, Colombo for tests.
Trinity College, Kandy closed down a number of class rooms after one of the school's children succumbed to the disease and authorities had cautioned principals of all schools to take steps to prevent the disease being spread among schoolchildren and authority was given to principals to close their schools for some days if any student with the disease was found in the school officials said.
Director of Health Services Central Province Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe said people should not fear the disease as it was not a fatal one and if anyone suspected of suffering from it should see the District Medical Officer.
